Free cupboard design online, with the costing attached

Most free interior design tools give you a picture and then ask for your phone number. This one gives you the bill of quantities.

There is a lot of free cupboard design software on the internet and most of it has the same business model: draw something pretty, then hand over your contact details to find out what it costs. The drawing is the bait. That is a reasonable way to run a furniture showroom and a poor way to help somebody decide between eighteen and twenty-five millimetre board.

What this tool does differently

Free interior design, and what "free" honestly means here

It means the tool costs nothing to use and does not require you to identify yourself. It does not mean somebody will come and build your kitchen for nothing. What you get is the part of custom interior work that is usually kept opaque — the quantities and the arithmetic — so that when you do talk to a carpenter or a contractor you are comparing their number against your own rather than against nothing.

Design cupboard online: the ten-minute version

Start from the space, not from the furniture. Measure the opening, then work inward.

• Set the outer height, width and depth to the space you actually have. The measuring guide covers the traps.
• Choose the board grade before anything else — it is the biggest single lever on the total. See BWP vs BWR.
• Add the internal divisions: hanging bays, shelves, drawers. Each one is real board and shows up in the total.
• Add shutters, and pick hinged or sliding. The buying guide explains the trade.
• Read the cutting list, and then nudge the width by twenty or thirty millimetres to see whether you can drop a sheet.

Wardrobe design online free is not the same as free advice

The tool will let you build things a designer would argue with — a cupboard to the ceiling with no loft access, a shelf spanning further than the board will carry. It says so, and then it lets you do it, because it is your room. The design rules are advisory in this app by deliberate policy: nothing is clamped, rejected or auto-corrected, and no quotation is withheld from a design that breaks a rule.
