Plywood sheet sizes, cutting lists and where the waste goes

Board is bought in sheets and used in rectangles. The gap between those two facts is one of the largest hidden costs in custom furniture.

You do not buy 45 sq ft of plywood. You buy sheets, and you pay for all of every sheet you open. A design whose parts happen to nest neatly onto four sheets costs four sheets; the same design 30 mm wider might need five, and nothing on the drawing will tell you.

The plywood sheet size you will actually be quoted

Common board sizes
SizeMetricNotes
8×4 ft2440 × 1220 mmThe default. An 8x4 plywood sheet is what "a sheet" means unless someone says otherwise.
7×4 ft2135 × 1220 mmSometimes stocked; useful when nothing exceeds 2100 mm.
6×4 ft1830 × 1220 mmLess common, occasionally cheaper per square foot.
8×3 ft2440 × 915 mmNarrow stock; rarely worth it for carcass work.

Two practical consequences follow immediately. A wardrobe 2100 mm tall gets a full-height side out of one 2440 mm length with 340 mm left over. A wardrobe 2500 mm tall does not, and every side panel now needs a joint or a second sheet. That 400 mm of height is one of the most expensive decisions in the whole design.

How a cutting list is built

A carpenter cutting list is the flat list of every rectangle to be cut, each with a finished length, width, thickness, board type, and how many of it. From that list the parts are nested onto sheets — laid out to minimise the number of sheets opened — and the saw kerf, usually 3 to 4 mm, is subtracted at every cut.

How to reduce plywood wastage

See the nesting rather than guessing at it

The configurator nests the whole design onto real sheets and reports the sheets used, the area used, the offcut area and where the offcut is — because "same sheet, same money" is a genuine answer and so is "one more sheet". Change a dimension and watch the sheet count. Open the design tool.

Common questions

What is the standard plywood sheet size in India?

Eight feet by four feet, or 2440 by 1220 millimetres. That is what a sheet means unless somebody says otherwise. Seven by four and six by four are stocked in some places, and they are occasionally worth buying when nothing in the design exceeds 2100 millimetres in length.

How do I reduce plywood wastage?

Keep every part under 2440 by 1220 millimetres so nothing needs a joint, try widths 30 millimetres either side of your intended one and compare the sheet count, size shelves so pairs fit across the 1220 millimetre width, and avoid grain locking parts that do not need it, because a part that can rotate nests better.

What is a cutting list and why should I ask for one?

It is the flat list of every rectangle to be cut, each with its finished length, width, thickness, board type and quantity, from which the parts are nested onto sheets. It is the one part of a quotation you can independently verify, so a supplier who will not provide one is asking to be trusted on exactly the thing that is checkable.
