Custom wardrobe cost in India: what you are actually paying for

Per-square-foot pricing is how two honest carpenters produce two very different numbers for the same cupboard. Here is what sits underneath it.

Almost every cupboard price in India arrives as one number multiplied by an area: so many rupees per square foot of front elevation. It is a convenient shorthand and it hides everything that matters. Two quotes at the same rate can differ by a third once you look at what board is inside, whether the back is 6 mm or 18 mm, whether the shutters are laminated on both faces, and whether the loft was counted at all.

The five things that actually move the wardrobe cost

A custom cupboard is a box made of sheet material, plus the things that hang off it. In rough order of how much they swing the total:

A worked example, so the number means something

Take a common shape: a 2100 mm high, 1800 mm wide, 600 mm deep two-door hinged wardrobe with a 450 mm loft above it, in 18 mm plywood with a 6 mm back, laminated on the outside, with four shelves and one hanging rail. Priced honestly that decomposes into roughly: eleven to thirteen board parts for the carcass and shelves, two shutters, a back panel, about twenty-two metres of edge banding, four hinges per shutter, a rail with two flanges, adhesive, and labour.

The point of the example is not the total — your dealer rates decide that, and the configurator lets you type them in. The point is that this is a list of things, each with a quantity and a rate, and that any quotation which cannot be broken back down into such a list is a number you are being asked to trust rather than to check. The wardrobe cost per square foot that comes out the other end is a result, not an input.

Cheap cupboards: where the money is genuinely saved

There is a difference between cheap cupboards and badly built ones. Real savings, in the order worth taking them:

An almirah, a cupboard and a wardrobe

In Indian usage these overlap. An almirah traditionally means a freestanding steel or wooden storage unit; cupboard and wardrobe are used interchangeably for built-in bedroom storage. A quotation will use whichever word the seller prefers, so the vocabulary is not a reliable guide to what is being built — the drawing and the cutting list are. If a supplier will not give you a cutting list, that is information.

Common questions

How much does a custom wardrobe cost in India?

It depends almost entirely on board grade, finish and hardware rather than on size alone. A quotation should be reducible to a bill of quantities — board parts, edge banding metres, hinges, rails, adhesive and labour — and any per-square-foot figure is the result of that list, not a substitute for it. The configurator computes the list from your own dealer rates so you can compare quotes on the same basis.

Why do two quotes for the same cupboard differ so much?

Usually board grade, back-panel thickness, whether the loft was counted, and how hardware was specified. A 30 to 45 per cent difference on the board line alone is normal between commercial MR plywood and BWP marine grade, and the board line is often half the job. Ask both suppliers for a part-by-part list and the differences become visible immediately.

Are cheap cupboards worth buying?

Cheap is not the same as badly built. Real savings come from using thinner board where span allows, putting marine-grade plywood only where water and weight actually go, designing to the 8 by 4 sheet so you buy fewer sheets, and choosing hardware deliberately. Savings that come from an unnamed board grade or an undisclosed back panel are not savings, they are a deferred cost.

What is a fair wardrobe cost per square foot?

There is no single fair figure, because the same square foot can contain a 6 mm back and commercial plywood or an 18 mm back and BWP with soft-close hardware. Treat any per-square-foot rate as a summary of a specification you have already read, and compare specifications rather than rates. Two quotes at an identical rate can differ by a third in what they deliver.

Is an almirah the same as a wardrobe?

In common Indian usage they overlap. Almirah traditionally means a freestanding steel or wooden storage unit, while cupboard and wardrobe usually mean built-in bedroom storage, but sellers use all three interchangeably. The word tells you very little; the drawing and the cutting list tell you everything.
